A Great Way to Start the Holiday Season!

The DCA hosted two teas to celebrate the holiday season.

Our Christmas Unwrapped Afternoon Tea was enjoyed by many groups wanting to relax before the holidays and gather for a girlfriend get-together. Chef/caterer Victoria Truchan of Country House Cuisine brought her love of the English tea room experience to our festive halls.

Thank you to all who came and made our first Mother/Daughter Nutcracker Tea a great success. The delicious menu, provided by Palmer’s Catering, included gourmet tea sandwiches, mini pastries, holiday cookies and assorted teas. Dancers from the Darien Arts Center entertained the audience with a beautiful performance of scenes from The Nutcracker. After the dancers were finished, many little ones put on a show of their own on our stage!

The DCA Annual Appeal is Underway!

Annual AppealPlease participate in whatever way you are able – the DCA is a privately-funded non-profit and does not receive any financial support from the Town of Darien – so we rely on the appeal to generate a significant portion of our income.  With your help, we will continue to enhance both our historic home, and our programming.  Your contribution also supports the philanthropic portion of our mission, including annual college scholarships for Darien High School graduates and our bird sanctuary, which is open to the public to enjoy. It’s easy to donate online.  Thank you for your support.

Look What Has Been Happening at the DCA!

This last month was very busy at the DCA and included our annual Halloween parade, painting and flower arranging classes, our Art Lecture Series, an ICEHOTEL, a famous author, great food demonstrations and family photo sessions!

Chef’s Tasting with Estia’s

Thank you to Colin Ambrose from Estia’s Back Porch Café in Darien for a delicious evening demonstration and tasting in the DCA commercial kitchen.  We appreciate Colin’s generous support of the DCA and his overall community-mindedness.  Stay tuned for more tasting experiences at the DCA.

Photo Sessions with Photographer Bill Wang

Both the DCA formal garden and our historic rooms were the backdrop for recent Saturday family photo sessions at the DCA, with the help of award-winning local photographer Bill Wang, who kindly split the proceeds with us.  We timed this event so that images would be ready for holiday card ordering.  We hope to offer another session this spring, that could be used not only for family portraits (think Mother’s/Father’s Day gifts), but also for LinkedIn, or senior portraits.

Returning Student Scholarship Awards

The DCA is the largest provider of scholarships at DHS – providing funding for both new and returning college students – and the only one offering recipients the opportunity to reapply for funding during all their years of college.  Celebrating its 75th anniversary of granting scholarships, the DCA will award a total of $51,000 this year, based on both merit and need.

Over the past 75 years, the DCA is proud to have awarded over $2 million in scholarship funding to more than 1300 DHS students – through the generosity of the Darien community, and income from DCA programs, house rentals and Thrift Shop.  Scholarship applications for seniors are made available through the DHS Guidance office each winter, and the returning student application is posted on the DCA website each spring.  Awards are determined by the DCA Scholarship Committee, after careful review of all applications and applicant interviews. The DCA would like to thank committee volunteers for their continued commitment to this vital community program.  Committee members include: Kate Larson, Joan Barksdale, Ulla Kremer, Judi Linskey, Diane Schlinkert, Linda Terhune and Pat van den Broek.
