Slate for the 2016-2017 DCA Board of Directors

According to the DCA bylaws, the Board of Directors slate must be made available to the membership 30 days in advance of the Annual Meeting.

At this year’s DCA Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 19th at 9:30am, Kristen Harnisch will celebrate the launch of her second historical novel, The California Wife. The event will be preceded by several minutes of DCA business, but is open to the public.  Click for full details and online registration.

Did You Dance with “John Travolta”?

Thank You for a Wonderful Studio 54 – Revisited Fundraiser the disco dance moves, “John Travolta,” 70s inspired decorations and all those auction prizes… our Studio 54 – Revisited fundraiser last Saturday night was a great event!

To those who joined us for the evening, the volunteers who worked so hard on every detail, and our donors and sponsors, thank you for your support, and for making the evening a success for the DCA mission, including scholarships for Darien High School graduates.

Look What Has Been Happening at the DCA!

Our Valentine’s Day tea was catered by the “fabulous girls” from Carolyn’s Absolutely Fabulous Events, who once again brought a proper British Tea Room to the DCA.

Those who enjoyed our Valentine’s Day tea also got to wish Pat Parlette a very happy 90th birthday! Pat is a long-time DCA Thrift Shop volunteer, and was one of the first DCA scholarship winners.










Our painting class with Nobu Miki was a success as many spent a relaxing morning creating a custom flower bouquet painting.

Cheese, cheese and more cheese was discussed and tasted at our last Women’s Luncheon as Darien Cheese Shop owner, Ken Skovron, presented the family tree of cheeses.

January 29th      What Now for Cuba’s Role in the World?
                           Presenter: Ambassador Paul Hare, Boston University
                           (Former British Ambassador to Cuba)

Join us for the DCA Academic Lectures Series in January 2016.Paul Webster Hare was a British diplomat for 30 years and the British ambassador to Cuba from 2001-04. He now teaches international relations at the Frederick S Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University.

Hare graduated with First Class Honors in Politics and Economics from Oxford University in 1972 and from the College of Law in London in 1976. He worked for five years in the private sector, in law and investment banking, before entering the British Diplomatic Service. He served overseas at the UK Representation to the EU in Brussels, in Portugal, New York, and in Venezuela as Deputy Head of Mission. He was Head of the Foreign Office’s Non-Proliferation Department and the first Project Director for the UK’s presence at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.

Hare is a Fellow of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University and served as president of the British Baseball Federation from 2000-01. He has been designated a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Ambassador Hare teaches classes at Boston University on Diplomatic Practice, Arms Control, Intercultural Communication and on Cuba in Transition.

Our Second Lecture on Cuba Draws Another Great Crowd





Our 2016 Academic Lecture Series on Cuba continued as our second speaker, Theodore Piccone, presented “Obama’s Big Bet on Cuba: Pros & Cons” to a packed room.

This series examines the past, present and future of the U.S.-Cuban relationship, discussed by Latin American experts from universities, think tanks and business.

Join us for our next lecture in this series on Thursday, January 21st, as Christopher Sabatini from Columbia University will present on “U.S. – Cuba Policy: How Did We Get Here?”
