Our formal garden offers an elegant retreat, perfect for cocktail parties, weddings, luncheons and more.
The DCA’s formal garden was designed by Ellen Biddle Shipman. Ms. Shipman was called the “Dean of American Women Landscape Architects” by House & Garden magazine. She designed more than 650 gardens across the United States during the first half of the twentieth century, including those of many prominent industrialists, such as the Fords, the Astors, and the du Ponts.
Shipman’s garden designs reveal the importance she placed on privacy, with the garden serving as a secluded retreat from daily life. Her gardens are also noted for their borders.
All DCA rental rooms look out to this garden, with access from first floor rooms available through French doors. Guests may additionally enter and exit the garden from our spacious parking area. See our formal garden in all of the seasons in photos below.
